Stormy Seaside Step by Step Acrylic Painting on Canvas for Beginners

Hits: 4

In this video, we’re gonna get together and learn how to paint a stormy sky over a crashing wave. This is a little more intermediate than some of my other videos, but there’s no reason a beginner can’t do it!

I’m painting on a 16×20-inch stretched canvas, but you can paint on any type and size of canvas you like.

I used:
• A 1-inch flat brush
• A 1/2-inch flat brush
• A 1/4-inch flat brush
• A large brush for scrubbing clouds
• A smaller brush for scrubbing
• A 1/2-inch angle brush (the puffier and older the better!)

I’m using Liquitex Basics acrylic paint in the following colors:
• Mars Black
• Titanium White
• Ultramarine Blue
• Alizarin Crimson
But you can use any colors you like.

  1. Jane, that's so funny you did the blah, blah, blah! My grandson did that just the other day to me! He is 5. I sat him down and said, Owen, what would you do if I was telling you the best pirate story, and I turned around and said…blah, blah, blah, and I walked away from you. His face instantly dropped and he said, grandma that would be so rude! I said honey, I love to hear what you have to say because its important, so when your talking to me, no matter what you say, I want you to have my full attention because I want to listen to what your telling me! He says, I'm so sorry grandma, I will never do the blah, blah, blah again, because I want to listen to what you have to say! <3 Awww, it was a Kodak moment! I'm sure Jane, and I probably speak for others…you are a great teacher, being patient, showing us techniques that you have practiced on for hours!!! Just to help us be better Artists! I can't even imagine the pressure of what you do each week!! Your videos do not drag on…there is no blah, blah, blah! We want to hear what you say!!! Thank you for all your teachings! I love going into depth on a subject and learning the time consuming things that really make up a painting! I look forward to the tough ones, love them all!

  2. So beautiful

  3. No Blah blah blah. It's exactly what I need to hear. Thank you. I am hoping to see an angel one day 🙂 Please, if you ever see this can you explain how you managed to keep the paint useable all that time? I throw away so much pain. In 10 minutes it's useless. :-/ kn

  14. YHANK YOU Jane…..your videos are informative and no their not to long

  15. I'm not sure how I haven't seen this video before today, but I LOVE IT!! Jane, you truly are an amazing teacher. You have given me techniques to use in my own painting, that make sense. (and also give me "duh" moments lol) I haven't had any formal training with art in general, (minus what I did in High School and a few classes in College) so I'm basically self taught in acrylic painting. You explain things so easily and it is so very nice to have explanations with these longer videos, since it really allows for understand of the why's. Thank you for your continued sharing of your gift, with all of us!

Ps do you ever do critiquing of paintings??

  19. I have a vice; I have to listen to someone talk when establishing my first couple of layers ( a distraction so I don't overthink my base layers) + hours = consistent.

  20. Love your videos, and I love even more that you're a Bob Ross fan! You remind me of him, in your great explanations and your calm approach.

  25. Thank you for the reassuring and inspiring chat regarding comparison and length of time to complete a painting. I really needed to hear that, because I do compare myself very often to professionals such as yourself in these videos, which can be quite discouraging. Thank you again for the insightful talk!
